Traditional Products from Africa
Products Containing Shea ButterShea Butter comes out of Africa. This yellow-white to ivory colored paste has been used for thousands of years by African healers to alleviate maladies of the skin an scalp. Shea Butter comes from the African Shea tree found along the West African Savannah Region. It is a wild growing tree that produces tiny almond-like fruits from which Shea Butter is extracted. The tree itself is not cultivated, and takes 40 to 50 years to mature. In most parts of West Africa, destruction of the Shea tree is forbidden due to its economic, health, and social benefits. (Shea Butter is a valuable source of food in Africa). Indeed many Herbalists in Africa regard Shea Butter as an invaluable agent for external and internal body purification.

INGREDIENTS

Shea Butter contains fatty acid triglycerides (mainly oleic and stearic) and a high amount of unsaponifiables, which stimulate cell regeneration and capillary circulation; these favor the healing of small wounds, cracks, crevices, and sun ulcers.

Crude Shea Butter has natural antioxidant properties due to its content in Tocopherol. In the cosmetic field, this property helps to prevent skin aging. Shea Butter has restructuring effects on the epidermis. It also has anti-elastic characteristics, which makes it a good agent to fight against stretch marks. It is very well tolerated by the skin, for it rarely results in any allergic reactions and can even be used on very sensitive skin areas such as mucus tissues and around the eyes. (Note: if you are allergic to nut products or latex, it is possible to have allergic reactions and you may wish to avoid shea products).

Shea Butter is an excellent ingredient to have in lotions, cream and moisturizers, because it does not dry out skin like petroleum-based products do. Most lotions on the market note petroleum as one of the main ingrediants.
